Boeing close to buying stake in supplier Spirit Aerosystems

Company that was created in 2005 with Boeing’s own aerostructures division is expected to be shared with Airbus, according to reports

Boeing may announce the buyback of Spirit Aerosystems in the coming days, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Spirit was created in 2005 with the spin-off of Boeing’s own aerostructures facilities in Wichita, Kansas.

Boeing had already revealed negotiations to take over the supplier following several quality problems presented and the fragile financial situation of Spirit Aerosystems.

However, rival Airbus is also a customer of Spirit, which produces components for the A220 and A350 jets. The impasse delayed a possible agreement, but sources interviewed by Reuters stated that there is already a draft for the deal.

According to him, Boeing will take over activities related to its commercial jet programs while Airbus will take over the factory in Belfast, Ireland, where parts for the A220 are produced, and with the production structure for the widebody A350.

A third slice of Spirit, on the other hand, has not yet been decided and could be divided between aircraft manufacturers or sold to third parties.

Squeezed by years of pressure from Boeing to reduce prices for its services and products, Spirit has posted significant losses.

In the first quarter alone, there were US$617 million in losses.
