Airbus has secured an additional order for the A220-300 from Air Canada, which has placed an order for an additional five aircraft.

The Canadian carrier has been flying the Bombardier-designed aircraft since January 2020 and currently has 34 A220-300s in its fleet.

The first order, for 45 jets, was placed in 2016 when the aircraft was still called the CS 300. In 2022, another 15 planes were ordered and with the new order, Air Canada will have 65 aircraft in its fleet.

“The A220 has delivered on its promises for Air Canada in its five years in service. It has allowed us to open new routes and better serve existing routes with an aircraft that has the right economics to support our profitable growth strategy,” said John Di Bert, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Air Canada.

“This is Air Canada’s third order for the A220 in a few years. We are committed to working closely with the flag carrier as we support its fleet renewal programme,” added Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales Commercial Aircraft at Airbus.

The small order comes in a year in which the A220 family has seen orders shrink. While it secured an order for 10 A220-300s from airBaltic in August, Airbus has had 26 aircraft cancelled from other orders.

The balance through November was therefore a reduction of 16 orders, meaning Air Canada’s five A220s should make up the smaller backlog.

With the new agreement, Airbus has 903 orders for the family, 806 for the A220-300 and 97 for the A220-100. There are 32 customers for the aircraft worldwide and almost 380 jets have been delivered so far.
