Airbus finds slots to sell 85 more A321neo to American Airlines

New deal with US carrier brings orders for largest A320neo family variant to 219 jets

If the choice of the Boeing 737 MAX 10 and another 90 Embraer E175 regional jets took the market by surprise, the order for 85 Airbus A321neo by American Airlines was more than expected.

The most popular commercial aircraft in history, the largest jet in the A320neo family is competed for by airlines and lessors around the world. The waiting list is huge, with almost 5,000 jets pending delivery.

Despite this, Airbus managed to find space on its assembly lines to produce 85 more of these planes for American Airlines.

The outlook released by the carrier indicates that the new batch of A321neo should begin to be delivered in 2027, with seven aircraft, followed by 14 jets in 2028 and the remaining 64 from 2029.

American Airlines is also a customer of the ultra-long-range A321XLR, which is expected to have the first jets delivered in the second half of 2024.

According to Airbus, American Airlines is the single largest operator of the A320 family in the world, in addition to having the largest A321 fleet of any airline.
