American Airlines revealed on Monday, 4, a broad fleet renewal plan with 260 firm orders and 193 purchase options for Airbus, Embraer and Boeing jets.
The big news is the option for the 737 MAX 10, the largest variant of Boeing’s single-aisle family. To add the jet to its fleet, American Airlines placed a firm order for 85 aircraft, in addition to converting 30 orders for the 737-8 to the new type, for a total of 115 jets.
The addition of the 737-10 to the fleet comes amid quality problems on Boeing’s assembly line and uncertainty regarding the certification of the aircraft, which has already been in testing for years.
“We deeply appreciate American Airlines’ trust in Boeing and its confidence in the 737 MAX family. American’s selection of the 737-10 will provide even greater efficiency, commonality and flexibility for its global network and operations,” said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

While American has shared a delivery plan for the new aircraft, it is unclear when the 737 MAX 10 will be delivered.
According to the outlook, there will be 20 deliveries of 737 MAX in 2024, 14 in 2025 and 10 in 2026, with a pause in 2027 and resumption in 2028
It could be an indication of when the 737-10 could arrive in its fleet as there are 115 aircraft to be delivered from there.
The delay in receiving the new planes may have motivated American Airlines to carry out an internal renovation of its A319 and A320, aircraft that are very old.
According to the company, the two Airbus jets will receive an updated cabin with new seats and overhead compartments in addition to the introduction of first class, with 12 and 16 seats on the A319 and A320. The renovation will begin in 2025.
