The Airports Council International (ACI) World released last week the ranking of the 10 busiest airports in the world. The data is considered preliminary, but indicated that Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport comfortably topped the list.

Delta Airlines’ biggest hub, Atlanta handled 93.7 million passengers in 2022, 20 million more than Dallas (American’s hub), the 2nd place.

Two other US airports follow, Denver (69.3 million) and Chicago O’Hare (68.3 million). The 5th place went to Dubai Airport, with 66.1 million, and which is the leader in international passengers, since there are no domestic flights there.

The list of 10 airports brings Istanbul as the busiest in Europe, with 64.3 million passengers. Next comes London’s Heathrow Airport, which was for a long time number 1 in Europe.

The British air terminal, however, suffered from the long period of social restrictions that ended only in March 2022. Since then, Heathrow has jumped from 54th to 8th place, with 61.6 million passengers, up 218% compared to 2021.

On a high, New Delhi Airport, in India, appeared in 9th place, with 59.5 million passengers. Previously, the terminal in the country’s capital had occupied the 17th and 13th places.

Hong Kong, the largest in air cargo

Due to the predominantly domestic traffic, the major US airports do not appear in the international traffic ranking.

On that list are seven European airports, including Amsterdam (52.5 million), Paris Charle De Gaulle (51.8 million) and Frankfurt (44.8 million). The three other occupants are Asian: in addition to Dubai, 1st in the ranking, Doha (Qatar) and Singapore close the top 10.

“The new top 10 busiest airports for passenger traffic reflects the resilience of the airport and aviation industry, and the eagerness of passengers to travel by air. While US airport hubs were able to recover quickly due to their strong domestic market, we are now witnessing global hubs joining upper ranks—including Dubai, Istanbul, and London Heathrow airport,” said Luis Felipe de Oliveira, ACI World Director General.
