Avion Express obtains AOC for subsidiary airline in Brazil

The carrier will offer wet-leasing services with a fleet of Airbus A320 jets, the first of which is already in the country.

The Irish Avia Solutions Group has obtained the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Brazilian civil aviation authorities for its new subsidiary, Avion Express Brasil.

The approval will allow the start of ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance) services for customers in the country, a type of leasing that was previously non-existent due to previous legislation.

“Avion Express Brasil AOC represents a significant step forward for ACMI solutions, as it opens up a new market and introduces innovative solutions for capacity management to airlines. We are deeply grateful to ANAC for recognizing the value of this expansion and for supporting it,” said Darius Kajokas, CEO of Avion Express.

Avion Express Brasil plans to begin operations this quarter. There is currently one Airbus A320 registered in Brazil, but the plan is to have ten aircraft of this type in its fleet by the end of the year.

According to the company, a total of 25 A320s should form its fleet between 2027 and 2028 and serve carriers in Latin America.

Seasonal demand

Avion Express wants to take advantage of a niche that has begun to be explored in the region, due to the seasonal demand for some routes.

Argentina’s FlyBondi, for example, operates a fleet of Boeing 737-800s, but has signed wet-leasing contracts to have the reinforcement of Airbus A320 aircraft operated by third parties.

In Brazil, Azul Linhas Aéreas used ACMI last December to cover the Viracopos-Lisbon route. Portugal’s Euro Atlantic provided its Boeing 777-200s for a few weeks.

In June, the airline will once again provide ACMI services on flights to Porto, in Portugal, and Madrid, in Spain.

“ACMI solutions are strategically designed to address the demands of peak travel seasons, allowing airlines to add or remove aircraft from their fleets as needed, providing the flexibility to adapt to market fluctuations and seasonality,” said Esteban Jauregui Lorda, CEO of Avion Express Brasil.
