Lessor Azorra has found a first customer for the Airbus A220-300 jets that were acquired from EgyptAir in February, Cyprus Airways.

The small carrier from the Mediterranean island has taken delivery of one of the planes, which has been given the registration 5B-DEC.

Cyprus Airways has already been flying two A220s since August 2023, leased by ALC and which were originally supposed to be delivered to Air Senegal.

The aircraft are configured with a two-class cabin, with 12 seats in business class and 115 in economy.

At EgyptAir, the A220-300 had a higher density configuration, with 140 seats in a single class. It is not known whether Azorra delivered the jet with an updated interior.

“We’re proud to welcome Cyprus Airways as an Azorra customer. The delivery of this A220, featuring freshly overhauled and updated engines from Pratt & Whitney, will complement the airline’s existing Airbus fleet,” said John Evans, CEO and Founder of Azorra.

“Cyprus Airways is delighted to receive one more Airbus A220 aircraft to enhance our current fleet. The aircraft encompasses the latest technology in safety and operations and has one of the best environmental footprints of any aircraft flying,” added Thanos Paschalis, CEO of Cyprus Airways.

Planes on the ground for a long time

EgyptAir received its 12 A220-300s between 2019 and 2022, but was unable to fly them for a long time due to problems affecting the Pratt Whtiney PW1500G (GTF) engine.

The turbofan has shown an accumulation of powder metal, which can interfere with its operation. As explained by Azorra, the A220 5B-DEC has already undergone the review that replaced critical parts.
