Dubai announced the start of the second phase of expansion at Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), currently the second in operation in the UAE city.
With an investment of US$35 billion in a new terminal, the airport will have the capacity to receive up to 260 million passengers per year.
According to the Prime Minister and Vice President of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the airport will be five times larger than Dubai International Airport (DXB).

“As we build an entire city around the airport in Dubai South, demand for housing for a million people will follow. It will host the world’s leading companies in the logistics and air transport sectors,” said the sheikh on social media.
Replacement for Dubai International Airport
Opened in 2010 in the south of the city, Al Maktoum International Airport, will become the hub for Emirates Airline and will have five parallel runways and 400 boarding gates for aircraft.
The plan is for the complex to replace the International Airport in the future and maintain the title of the largest international hub in the world. Last year, almost 87 million transit passengers passed through Dubai.
Tourism in the city is also expanding with 17 million visitors in 2023, an increase of 20%.
“We are building a new project for future generations, ensuring continuous and stable development for our children and their children in turn. Dubai will be the world’s airport, its port, its urban hub, and its new global center”, added the first- minister.
