On Friday, Embraer delivered the first modernized E-99M aircraft to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). The aircraft, based on the ERJ 145 regional jet, has been used as an Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) platform since 2002 for surveillance of the Amazon.
The FAB closed an agreement with Embraer to update five E-99s with new mission systems and related subsystems, such as electronic warfare, command and control, electronic countermeasures and aerial surveillance radar.
“For Embraer, it is a privilege to continue meeting FAB’s needs to keep this robust and modern aircraft updated. It plays a strategic role in Brazil’s defense system and has already proven its operational effectiveness,” said Jackson Schneider, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security.
Among the partners in the update program are COPAC, Saab, Rohde & Schwarz and Aeroelectronica International. Visually, the differences can be seen in the fuselage, which gained new equipment fairings.
In addition to the E-99 variant, there is also the electronic warfare R-99, which was not part of the scope of the modernization project. In addition to Brazil, Greece, Mexico and India operate the EMB 145 AEW.
