After becoming the third customer of the C-390 Millennium multi-mission jet, the Hungarian Air Force can order another Embraer aircraft, the A-29 Super Tucano training and light attack aircraft.
Hungary’s interest in the well-known Brazilian plane was revealed by Blog Before Flight on Tuesday, citing local sources. The publication, however, did not say what number of aircraft was intended by the government of the European country.
Last year, Czech Aero planemaker offered the L-39NG training jet to Hungary, but nothing has been announced so far. The air force operated the first generation of the aircraft, the L-39 Albatros, but retired them in 2009 and has since trained its pilots in other countries.
Small fleet
The Hungarian Air Force currently has a very limited number of aircraft. Since the 2000s, the country has operated 14 Saab Gripen C/D fighters supplied through leasing and whose contract will expire in 2026.
The government recently started renovating the helicopter fleet, replacing old Russian models Mi-17 and Mi-24 with the Airbus H145M and H225M. In addition, Hungary acquired two C-390 airlifters from Embraer at the end of last year, an aircraft that is a competitor to the C-130 Hercules.
The Super Tucano, in addition to being used in advanced training, can perform light attack and reconnaissance missions.
