ITA Airways has started a twice-weekly service that will connect the two cities non-stop.
The route had not been operated by an Italian airline for over 10 years, when Alitalia suspended its flights.

Amid a long civil war, Libya has not received flights from European Union airlines for a long time.
ITA flights AZ868 will operate on Thursdays and Sundays, departing from Fiumicino Airport at 9:15 am and arriving at Mitiga Airport at 12:10 pm (local time).
The return flight, AZ869, departs from Tripoli at 13:05 and lands in Rome at 14:10 (local time).
The aircraft used on the route is an Airbus A319, with 144 seats in a single class.
The connection between Rome and Tripoli is already operated by Libyan carrier MedSky, which flies the route twice a week with Airbus A320 aircraft.
“We are proud to inaugurate today our first direct commercial flight between Tripoli and Rome Fiumicino, strengthening commercial and cultural ties between Libya and Italy in support of the bilateral relations between the two Countries”, said Andrea Benassi, General Manager of ITA Airways.
