Lufthansa decided to expand the Airbus A350-900 long-range jet fleet in advance. In addition to having orders for new aircraft from the manufacturer, the German airline announced the leasing of further four aircraft on Monday.
The four A350-900 will start operating in the first quarter of 2022, bringing the total number of aircraft of the type to 21 units. The jets will be supplied by companies Avolon, SMBC and Goshawk.
“The Airbus A350 is one of the most modern aircraft of our time. Extremely fuel-efficient, very quiet and much more economical than its predecessors. Our customers appreciate not only the sustainability but also the premium flight experience with this aircraft. Allow us to remain flexible in fleet planning and make the most of exceptional market opportunities,” said Dr. Detlef Kayser, Member of the Executive Board Deutsche Lufthansa AG.
Lufthansa has an order for 45 A350-900s from Airbus of which 17 have already been delivered. In May, the carrier expanded the order by five aircraft in order to speed up fleet renewal.
While expanding the number of A350s, which consume just 2.5 liters of kerosene per passenger every 100 km, Lufthansa has sent its latest A380 to storage in Teruel, Spain.
But while awaiting delivery of other A350s and also the Boeing 787-9, another new-generation aircraft, the company is reactivating its Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A340-600 jets to meet growing demand.
