Uruguay’s new flag carrier will be called SUA Líneas Aéreas and will begin its first flights in October 2025, airBaltic revealed.
SUA was officially launched on Tuesday in a ceremony at Montevideo’s Carrasco International Airport. The initiative is supported by the government, which is seeking to fill a gap since 2012 when carrier Pluna ceased operations.
The Latvian airline has signed a strategic partnership to support the launch of services to the South American country.

In addition, airBaltic will supply five of its Airbus A220-300s to SUA to bring its route network into operation.
The Latvian airline will also be responsible for operational aspects, pilot training, IT, among others.
SUA plans to fly to key destinations not only in Uruguay but also to Argentina, Brazil and Chile.
It will also be the debut of the A220 in South America after Airbus has been trying to find customers in the region for several years.
According to Antonio Rama, CEO of SUA, the investment for the creation of the company does not include funds from Saudi Arabia, as reported by the local press, but he did not reveal who is funding the project.
“Collaborating with SUA Líneas Aéreas represents a unique opportunity to bring airBaltic’s expertise in operating the Airbus A220-300 to a new region. This partnership reflects our commitment to fostering innovation and improving air connectivity globally,” said Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic.
“Through this alliance, we will benefit from airBaltic’s expertise in key areas such as fleet management, operational efficiency, and staff training, equipping us with the tools needed to develop a customer-focused operation. We are confident that their experience and support will be critical in this early phase of our development,” added Antonio Rama, CEO of SUA Líneas Aéreas.
