The government of Paraguay and BNDES, Brazil’s development bank, signed a financing contract for the acquisition of six A-29 Super Tucano turboprops from Embraer.
The contract worth approximately US$ 100 million was signed on November 18 during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
The Paraguayan Air Force and Embraer announced the order in July, during the Farnborough Airshow, but negotiations between the country’s government and BNDES had already been taking place previously.

Embraer had taken an A-29 for a demonstration in Asunción in February and since then Paraguayan President Santiago Peña had taken the acquisition of the aircraft as a given.
According to Embraer, the first A-29 Super Tucano will be delivered in 2025 and will be used in various missions, ranging from armed reconnaissance, close air support, light attack and advanced training.
Paraguay has considered the Super Tucano as a reinforcement in the fight against drug trafficking and also to control its borders.
The South American nation’s Air Force has been operating Embraer’s AT-27 Tucano for several years.
With no deliveries since 2021, Embraer has white-tailed Super Tucano aircraft in storage, hence the short delivery time to Paraguay.
Another country in the region that recently selected the aircraft was Uruguay, which plans to have 12 of them in its air force.
