Qatar Airways adds 20 more Boeing 777-9 to its order book

Launch customer for the 777X in 2014, the Doha-based carrier now has 94 firm orders, 60 of them for the passenger variant and the rest for the 777-8F freighter

Qatar Airways has once again closed an order for 777X jets with Boeing after ordering 34 777-8F freighters in 2022.

This time, the Doha-based carrier has ordered another 20 777-9s that will join the 40 orders for the variant already agreed since 2014.

The 777X launch customer, Qatar Airways, had already signed the agreement with Boeing previously, but the 20 planes appeared without customer identification in the order book.

It is understood, however, that Qatar has replaced the two dozen 777-9s that had been converted just over two years ago to 777-8F freighters.

At the time, the airline had 60 firm orders for 777-9s and expanded the deal by 14 777-8Fs in addition to switching 20 versions from passenger to freighter.

“Qatar Airways is proud to announce an expansion to the existing Boeing 777X aircraft order with an additional 20, totaling 94 Boeing 777X aircraft,” said Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer.

“Qatar Airways is a leader in our industry, and we are honored the airline added 20 more 777-9 jets to its large Boeing order book,” said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We appreciate their confidence that Boeing’s market-leading widebody family will provide outstanding fuel efficiency and a superior passenger experience for its global operations.”

In addition to the 777X, Qatar also has 12 787 Dreamliner and 25 737 MAX on order.

The 777-9 is expected to enter service at the end of 2025, expects Boeing, which recently began certification flights for the aircraft with the FAA.
