Spain has approved the framework for a joint acquisition of Airbus A330 MRTT tankers with Poland, advancing an arrangement that would provide the Polish Air Force with four aircraft by 2030.
The Spanish Council of Ministers authorized the program on August 25. The planned acquisition covers seven new A330 MRTTs, with three intended for Spain and four for Poland, although final contracts still need to be signed.

The latest decision advances a Polish tanker procurement that has evolved considerably during 2026. As Air Data News reported, Warsaw was then preparing to use European Union financing to acquire four A330 MRTTs under its long-running Karkonosze program.
At the time, Poland was seeking funding through the EU's Security Action for Europe (SAFE) mechanism, an approach that favored a European solution for a requirement that had also attracted the Boeing KC-46A.
The program changed again following negotiations with Spain. During a visit to Madrid in June, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said Poland wanted four A330 MRTTs and emphasized the requirement to receive them by 2030.
Cooperation with Spain provided a way to meet both objectives. Madrid agreed to coordinate its own A330 MRTT acquisition with Poland and make production positions available under the combined program, allowing Warsaw to increase the planned fleet from three to four aircraft without pushing deliveries beyond its target.
Poland returns to A330 MRTT
The choice also brings Poland back to an aircraft it had considered more than a decade ago.
Warsaw was an early participant in the multinational European tanker initiative that eventually became NATO's Multinational MRTT Fleet. Poland withdrew before the program reached its current form, leaving the country without its own tanker aircraft while other participants went on to operate a shared fleet of A330 MRTTs.
That capability has become increasingly relevant as Poland expands its combat aircraft fleet. The country operates F-16s, is introducing F-35As and has also acquired South Korean FA-50 light combat aircraft.
Boeing's KC-46A was considered again during the latest Karkonosze procurement, but European financing and the arrangement with Spain ultimately provided Poland with a path to obtain four A330 MRTTs within the required timeframe.
Spain already operates three A330 MRTTs converted from former Iberia A330-200 passenger aircraft. The three additional aircraft included in the new program would double its fleet, while Poland would establish its first national aerial refueling fleet.
In addition to aerial refueling, the A330 MRTT can perform strategic passenger and cargo transport and aeromedical evacuation missions. It can carry up to 245,000 lb (111,000 kg) of fuel without additional tanks.
