India’s dynamic and growing air travel market has become a fierce competition among the country’s carriers.

The expansion of IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has prompted the giant Tata Group to take over state-owned Air India and transform it into a global carrier.

Hundreds of single- and twin-aisle jets have come in orders that rival orders from US carriers.

Air India has ordered 777X and 787 A350s while IndiGo has secured a pioneering contract for 30 A350s.

In light of this, SpiceJet, a low-cost carrier founded in 2004, is already considering a possible order for widebodies.

Speaking to reporters at the Aviation Festival Asia 2025, Ajay Singh, the airline’s CEO, said that SpiceJet will eventually need to add widebody aircraft and launch long-haul flights.

Singh admitted that initial discussions are already underway amid negotiations to expand the narrowbody fleet.

The optimism reflects the airline’s experience with some widebody aircraft used during charter and repatriation flights.

SpiceJet, however, is a small carrier and is trying to rebuild its finances. In January, the airline managed to resume flights on one of the seven Boeing 737 MAX 8s that were grounded due to non-payment of lease payments.

SpiceJet’s fleet consists of 59 aircraft, 24 of which are Dash 8 turboprops and the rest are Boeing 737s of various models. In contrast, Air India has 198 aircraft and IndiGo has 438 jets.
