The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMW) has exercised the contract option to have a third Saab GlobalEye airborne early warning (AEW&C) aircraft.
The Air Force had already ordered two jets to replace its Saab 340 (ASC 890) turboprops with options for two more aircraft.
Since announcing the transfer of the two ASC 890s to Ukraine, the Swedish government intended to expand the fleet of AEW&C aircraft.

According to Saab, the value of the contract is SEK 2.6 billion (around US$246 million) and was signed in 2022.
“We are proud to contribute to Sweden’s defense with another GlobalEye aircraft, which will provide unique situational awareness of the surroundings as well as the capability of early detection and warning of potential threats in the air, at sea or on land,” says Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab.
Designated S 106, GlobalEye uses a Bombardier Global 6000 executive jet as an aerial platform to receive passive and active sensors that provide long-range detection and identification of objects in the air, at sea and over land.
