US regional airline Silver Airways announced on December 30 that it has voluntarily filed for bankruptcy.

Founded in 2010, the Fort Lauderdale-based carrier operates a fleet of 14 ATR turboprops, aircraft rarely seen on regional flights in the US.

“Today, we voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida,” Silver said in a statement to customers.

The airline stressed that the filing will allow it to raise additional capital to undergo a financial restructuring.

“We anticipate completing this process by the first quarter of 2025, emerging stronger and ready to continue serving you with the same dedication we’ve upheld for over 13 years,” Silver Airways added.

Silver Airways debuted in 2011 after taking over the assets of Gulfstream International Airlines, including a large fleet of Beechcraft 1900D turboprops.

After maintaining the Saab 340 as its mainstay aircraft for many years, the regional carrier has since added larger, more efficient ATR 42-600 and 72-600 aircraft.

The fleet currently consists of eight ATR 42s and six ATR 72s that fly to destinations such as Orlando, Tampa, Pensacola and the Bahamas.

Silver also maintains an operational base in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from where it flies to several destinations in the Caribbean.

In 2023, the company ended a partnership with Amazon in addition to experiencing problems with the administration of Fort Lauderdale International Airport due to non-payment of airport fees.
