Emirates SkyCargo, the group’s air cargo division, has announced a new wet-lease agreement for two Boeing 747Fs with Compass Air Cargo, from Bulgaria.

The aircraft will immediately reinforce its route network and will join four other Boeing 747s leased over the past year.

The option for the ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance) modality was the solution found while deliveries of its own freighters are delayed.

Emirates currently has 10 Boeing 777Fs, the most recent in December. In addition, there are 13 other jets of the type on order and scheduled for delivery by 2026.

The 747F has previously been operated by Emirates through agreements with Atlas Air Cargo and ASL Airlines on two occasions.

The Boeing 747Fs, although not as efficient, appear to be the temporary solution for the project to convert up to 10 Boeing 777-300ERs from passengers to cargo.

The initial agreement was signed with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) in 2021 and provided for a batch of four aircraft. However, the “Big Twin” 777-300ERSF project has been delayed.

Emirates also said it continues to evaluate orders for the Boeing 777-8F and the Airbus A350F, currently under development.

To meet the growing demand, the airline said it is counting on the cargo hold of the new A350-900s, of which it will receive 65 aircraft from Airbus.
